As part of BREAK-FAST JAM 2024 activities, I organised a series of skills and knowledge development sessions – 2024 workshops week for young active & competing breakers, coaches & trainers.
Overall, we provided 4 free skills and knowledge based workshops to approximately 88 young active breakdancers based in Kampala, Wakiso & nearby districts.
1). Digital skills workshop for breakdancers. 25 interested participants (8 females & 17 male) attended this engagement, we explored phone applications that’re useful for breakdancers + how to make good use of them.
2). Female breakdancers focused workshop. We had 10+ young, active and emerging female breakers from Kampala and surrounding communities attend the bgirls workshop.
Because the current number of active bgirls is still low, this session intended to bring active bgirls face to face and facilitate sharing.
We covered areas like proper warm up & stretching, floor-work foundations, concepts, various effective exercises & practices and finished off with a discussion.
3). Open breakdance workshop. We brought together over 25 young active Bgirls, Bboys (established & upcoming) and trainers/coaches.
One of the key intentions was to bring practitioners in one space, facilitate in-person exchanges and discussions, appreciate & enjoy the dance!
4). Dance based Community outreach. We finished off with a community outreach in Kamwokya suburbs of Kampala where we brought a blend of dance to a group of 26 young boys & girls who are enthusiastic to learn and hold so much potential. We demonstrated to them various urban dance styles, taught them foundations, played creative & fun games and Q&A session.
What I did during the project;
- Raising funds and all needed resources;
- Recruite supporting personnel – workshop facilitators, documentation, Djs, suitable workshops participants etc;
- Develop the project, workshops concepts etc;
- Teach some of the workshops;
- Implement the project from beginning to end.
