I started breakdancing in late 2008 with Breakdance Project Uganda (BPU), a non-profit organization using dance, Hiphop, art & education for empowerment & positive social change.
Becoming an orphan while still a child, living homeless and dropping out of school, I was empowered much through breakdance because I earned a new and meaningful identity. Instead of Mark the orphan, the school dropout or the homeless boy, my label changed to Mark the breakdancer or Mark the breakdance teacher.
I decided to use it as a tool to uplift others by teaching and sharing my breakdance skills. I;
- Teach workshops (for both students and teachers),
- Judge battles/competitions,
- Consult on applying it effectively in various contexts and for various purposes,
- Speaking.
I co-founded Break-Fast Jam, one of the long serving and consistent breakdance & hip-hop based festival in East and Central Africa.
Special features;
2014: Documentary film “Shake the Dust,” produced by the American Hiphop artist Nas and Adam Sjoberg.
2020: Book “BUILD! Power of hiphop diplomacy in a divided world.” by Pro. Mark Kartz
